Future Friars: Padres Top 30 Prospects for 2002, Part 1
The bottom third of the Padres Top 30 is an odd mix of high-ceiling projects and lower upside players who might contribute as early as this coming season. Justin Germano and Henry Perez will be 19 years old in 2002 and could find their way onto the radar screen if they step up their performance. Brett Jodie and Kevin Eberwein won't ever be stars but could help the Pads in the short-term. The rest of the list is filled with 'tweeners, guys who aren't likely to make a huge contribution but who still have a shot at reaching the Show.
21. Omar Falcon, C
DOB: 09/01/82
Acq: draft 2000, rd 3; Miami (Fla.) Southridge HS
Ht: 6'0" Wt: 190
Aside from having a very cool name, Falcon is a promising young catcher. Right now he strikes out way too often but he has good power potential and he does draw walks. He's also supposedly a solid receiver. This is an upside pick. Falcon may turn out to be nothing but if he can make better contact he could be special.

DOB: 07/24/82
Acq: draft 2000, rd 4; Belaire HS (Baton Rouge, La.)
Ht: 6'0" Wt: 195
A standout running back at Tulane University, Moore is an exceptional athlete and an extremely raw baseball player. Like Vince Faison, he has tremendous upside if he learns to harness his natural tools. But there's a lot of work to be done here. Very much a project at this point.

23. Brett Jodie, RHP
DOB: 03/25/77
Acq: draft 1998, rd 6 (Yankees); U. of South Carolina
Ht: 6'4" Wt: 208
Jodie is a finesse righthander who has had terrific success in the minors thanks to impeccable control. However, his inability to put hitters away at higher levels remains cause for concern. Also, in his brief big-league trial last year, he had trouble locating his pitches and keeping balls in the park. If everything goes well for him, he'll be another Bob Tewksbury and work comfortably at the back end of someone's rotation. More likely, though, he's a future swingman with little upside. Still, he's about as ready as he'll ever be for the big leagues and could contribute this year.

DOB: 08/06/82
Acq: draft 2000, rd 13; Claremont HS (Calif.)
Ht: 6'2" Wt: 195
Germano doesn't overpower hitters, instead relying on pinpoint control for his success. However, he is still young enough to add some velocity. Germano should return to Ft. Wayne and will move up the ladder one rung at a time. Comparisons to Jake Peavy are premature but there are similarities. Keep an eye on Germano in 2002.

25. Henry Perez, RHP
DOB: 10/27/82
Acq: free agent 1999, Dominican Republic
Ht: 6'3" Wt: 210
Perez' primary asset at this point is his age. At 18 years old, despite the high ERA, he posted some nice peripheral numbers in the hitter-friendly Pioneer League. Perez likely will begin 2002 at Ft. Wayne. Watch him closely. If he does well in a full-season league, this one could be a keeper.

26. Doc Brooks, LF
DOB: 01/21/80
Acq: draft 2001, rd 7; U. of Georgia
Ht: 5'10: Wt: 205
One of the more intriguing prospects in the chain, Brooks is all about power. Unfortunately, the rest of his game isn't quite there yet. If Brooks can learn to make better contact and draw some walks, he has a chance. The upside here is very high but so is the flameout possibility.

27. Marcus Nettles, LF
DOB: 05/15/80
Acq: draft 2001, rd 11; U. of Miami (Fla.)
Ht: 5'11" Wt: 185
Nettles is one of the fastest players in the Padre organization but he is something of a project. Although he walks enough to bat near the top of the order, he needs to cut down on his strikeouts. He also needs to improve his basestealing. Nettles has absolutely zero power (only 3 of his 64 hits last year went for extra bases, all doubles) but if he can learn to tailor his game to the tools he possesses, he might make a useful fourth outfielder down the line.

28. Jason Wiedmeyer, LHP
DOB: 10/15/78
Acq: draft 2001, rd 6; U. of Memphis
Ht: 6'3" Wt: 200
Wiedmeyer got his pro career off to a tremendous start, pitching well in the Northwest League before making a brief appearance in the Midwest League. Wiedmeyer isn't a flamethrower so he'll need to keep his walks down to succeed.

DOB: 08/16/82
Acq: draft 2000, rd 10: El Capitan HS (Lakeside, Calif.)
Ht: 6'0" Wt: 175
San Diego product Nulton is an intriguing kid who could someday make a big-league utility player in the Craig Counsell mode. Although he doesn't possess much power or speed, he has good plate discipline and can play two positions on the infield. We'll need to see how Nulton does in full-season ball but he's off to a good start.

DOB: 04/30/77
Acq: draft 1998, rd 5; UNLV
Ht: 6'4" Wt: 200
Eberwein, a college teammate of Oakland prospect Eric Ludwick, is absolutely in the wrong organization for a corner infielder. Injuries marred his 2001 campaign but he can hit and has good gaps power. Probably not a regular but could make a nice bat off the bench, in the Greg Colbrunn/Kevin Millar mold if given the chance.

DOB: 11/22/78
Acq: draft 2001, rd 19; Belmont U. (Tenn.)
Ht: 6'1" Wt: 215
Anderegg was pitching for the Gateway Grizzlies in the independent Frontier League when the Padres drafted him. He doesn't have overpowering stuff but is reported to be a hard worker, and it's difficult not to be pleased with the early returns. Anderegg will probably start 2002 at Ft. Wayne or possibly Lake Elsinore. We'll know more about him after we see what he does in full-season ball.
